In an effort to boost the production of green hydrogen in the country, the Dutch government opened an incentive scheme last autumn. After the successful completion of the competitive bidding, the award of about €250 million has been granted to 7 green hydrogen projects amounting to a combined capacity of 101 MW.
The subsidy is for those projects with an electrolysis installation of 0.5 to 50 MW to produce renewable hydrogen. Media reports suggest that the bidding process was extremely competitive with more than €600 million worth of bids registered in total.
The winning bidders have to commission their hydrogen projects by 2028. Among the 7 selected projects, the largest subsidy is reported to be €3.2 million per MW by capacity.
The selected projects include the following:
- RWE's 50 MW Eemshydrogen plant in Eemshaven
- VoltH2's 50 MW plant in Delfzijl
- H2 Hollandia, a 5 MW plant in Nieuw-Buinen
- Hysolar's 2.5 MW project in Nieuwegein, co-located with a 9 MW solar farm
- Two projects named as 'Groengas asset' (Amsterdam and Groningen)
- A project by Van Kessel Olie in Oude Tonge
Netherlands is one of the most active market in Europe in terms of the emerging traction for green hydrogen developments.
Early this year, the Dutch government had opened a consultation for an incentive package for the developers of clean energy technologies, including a subsidy of up to €50 million investing in electrolyzer manufacturing for each company.
